Al Bedoo Oriental Band
by Arnold A. Berger
The full name of the 'Shrine' is Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.
In 1953, the heads of the Al Bedoo Oriental Band decided that we would endeavor to become as authentically Arabic as possible. At that time, we had a member of the band, one Bud Mollohan, who was an employee of the Interior Department, associated with water use and conservation. His section was closed down and Bud was transferred to Jordan, the country, not a small town in Montana. Who could quarrel with the infinite wisdom of the government's decision to transfer a Montana irrigation expert to the near East to teach Arabs water conservation?
In any event, Bud was able to get pipe and plastic supplies to Jordan and became a favorite of (King) Hussein. Through his efforts, he obtained uniforms for us. Our local newspaper had our photographs on the front page when we first paraded in our new uniforms. Copies were sent to Bud, who showed them to the King. When Hussein became convinced that we were not portraying Arabs in a demeaning manner, he was delighted and presented all band members with the medallions worn by the Jordanian Legions. These were worn by all members of the band until recently.
Bud also became friends with General Glubb, who trained Hussein's legions. When General Glubb retired, he toured the United States on a speaking tour. He visited Bud in Billings. Bud prevailed on the Band to perform for him. He believed we were Arabs. General Glubb then obtained the Red and White Kafiyas, which were a part of the official uniforms of the Arab Legions.
We gradually learned the type of music, and learned phrases of Arabic, which we now use, from exchange students.
The Arabs use their drums not only with other music, but in war as well. Great groups of drummers were utilized to spook the horses of the crusaders. Our emphasis is on percussion. Therefore, in our various competitive situations, if the judges are turned on by the percussion, we score well. If they are melody oriented, not so good.
Salaam Aleikum!
Yours very truly,
